At Metalsource, we welcome challenges that require thoughtful, tailored solutions. This project involved a newly installed air handler unit where access for maintenance had been overlooked during initial design.
The equipment rested on a frame engineered for a much larger unit, leaving a 4-foot galvanized steel barrier standing 5 feet tall between maintenance personnel and the unit’s access door. The customer needed a lightweight, easily assembled system that could be installed on site—avoiding the need to crane a fully assembled structure onto the roof and minimize additional load on the roofing itself. Additionally, roof membrane penetration for anchoring was not an option.
Our solution was a modular aluminum stair system anchored directly into the existing steel framing. Starting with a standard off-the-shelf stair design, we engineered custom channels and brackets that served both as structural support and secure anchoring points.
This approach provided safe, reliable access while protecting the roof membrane and maintaining a minimal load footprint—delivering precisely what the customer needed with speed and precision.
